In this weeks lecture we had a guest speaker who presented  about social media in the classroom. I really appreciated what he had to offer but I also did not agree with what he had to say a lot of the time. I am personally a strong believer in not using social media in the class room becuase I want my students to not be staring at a screen but to be doing hands on work that allows their creativity to flourish. Yes as a future teacher I will have a no phone policy and if a student is own their phone I am going to confiscate it. Our guest speaker said that is not my right as a teacher ,which is properly very true but it is the only way the student is going to learn to not be on their phones while I am teaching and so I earn the respect from other students that when I say something I mean it. The guest speaker gave an example “if you got pulled over by the cops instead of them giving you a speeding ticket they are going to take away your phone for 24 hours” well personally I would WAY rather them take my phone away (with no hesitation). I know teachers are trying to go digitally because that is the way the world is moving and to save the environment form cutting down trees; but I believe it is so important for students to learn how to print, write a letter, and have face to face conversations. I think social media is wrecking communication skills within person and kids mental health have recently become a major issue. He quoted “you can’t just tell a kid to go outside and play anymore” and I think that is completely wrong. 100% you can tell a kid to go play outside, in fact that is probably what they need most in their life… to go explore, be creativity, and enjoy what Mother Earth have to offer. I do not believe there is a need for social media in the classroom and I can not wait to install the beauty of the outdoors into my future students that is not through a screen.
